Diabetic Retinopathy


Diabetic Retinopathy is the major cause of blindness in Diabetic patients. Diabetes when not controlled or after about 10 years start affecting the retina of the eyes. At the Macula which is the most sensitive part of the eyes, there appears yellowish exudates with or without oedema. Than some aneurysms and small dot, blot and blotch types of hemorrhages appear. When still the condition advances, new vessels form. This is a dangerous stage since these vessels can bleed profusely and affect the vision. Gradually fibrosis appears which can lead to retinal detachment and total blindness.
